It never dawned on me that I was embodying the strong black woman stereotype, or how miserable it was making me. The myth of the strong black woman I recently did a podcast interview about COVID-19 and the black community. Both made me think about the strong black woman stereotype that many black women internalize, even to the detriment of our mental health. We can think of the cyclical relationship between the strong black woman stereotype and racial discrimination as a tag team. The strong black woman stereotype worsens existing stress because of the expectation that black women need to look strong and not discuss their challenges.
