Getting a COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy can protect you from severe illness from COVID-19. Additionally, pregnant people with COVID-19 are at increased risk of preterm birth and might be at increased risk of other adverse pregnancy outcomes compared with pregnant women without COVID-19. However, there are currently limited data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant people. Clinical trials that study the safety of COVID-19 vaccines and how well they work in pregnant people are underway or planned. The Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are mRNA vaccines that do not contain the live virus that causes COVID-19 and therefore, cannot give someone COVID-19.
