How can I tell if I have a cold, a flu or COVID-19?

The common cold, influenza (the flu) and COVID-19 are all caused by respiratory viruses and share some of the same symptoms, but they can lead to very different outcomes. Cold symptoms often come on gradually. Flu symptoms tend to come on more suddenly and are typically more severe than cold symptoms. Older people are more likely to have severe flu or COVID-19; young children are more likely to have severe flu but are at low risk for severe COVID-19. Testing is the only way to know for sure whether you have a cold, influenza or SARS-CoV-2.
