FDA Authorizes First U.S. COVID-19 Vaccine

On December 11, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted its first emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and the German company BioNTech. COVID-19 vaccine development has been remarkably swift. Within that age cohort, there was one case of symptomatic COVID-19 in the vaccine group and 19 cases in the placebo group. There were two deaths in the vaccine group and four in the placebo group, most of them due to cardiovascular disease. Days after vaccinations started in the United Kingdom, two National Health Service workers with a history of prior vaccine reactions experienced allergic reactions to the vaccine; both recovered.
